The Christmas House of Cobourg

In Community, Local

It’s the unofficial Christmas house of Cobourg.

The elegantly decorated house at 870 Caddy Drive seems to be getting noticed more and more each year.

The couple who asked not to be identified said they’ve always been into Christmas since moving to Canada seven years ago.

“We couldn’t afford as many toys as we could decorations when we were younger, so I brought the spirit of Christmas to the house through decorating,” said the woman.

Their six children have grown up and moved away, but that hasn’t stopped the couple from brightening up the neighbourhood.

“We’re going to make the best of it like everyone else. Pictures and memories can be shared between us.”

The inside of the couples home is just as elegant as the outside with the Christmas theme.

People regularly take photos and they get thanked for adding that extra “touch” for the season.

“It makes people happy and that warms our hearts.”

“For some reason people feel like it’s a Christmas House. We hear this all the time throughout the year.”

This year when the owner came home from work one day, there was a bag at the front door.

“When I opened it there was a yellow envelope that said, “To The Christmas House.”

It was a poem written by Colleen Fisher who lives in the neighbourhood.

“It was so nice – I cried.”

“It was a beautiful poem. COVID has taken so much from people. Not only taken so much, but at times it’s given people no hope.”

“But we’re both going to try and share as much warmth and happiness to others as we can and that’s why we go to this much effort.”

The Christmas House
Today I passed by the Christmas House
it has come to life once more
the pretty blue frame
and the white picket fence
that the garland and bows adorn
in the windows are two Christmas trees
I imagine them twinkling at night
pretty packages underneath them
illuminated by the lights
I smell the Christmas cookies
cooling on a plate
to enjoy with a cup of hot chocolate
saved for a later date
I hear the Christmas carols
the favourites brought out each year
remembering Christmases from the past
a way to keep them near
Though this year has been different
The Pandemic is to blame
The warmth I feel from the Christmas House
always remains the same
