Students Sat In Darkened Classrooms on Monday as a Result of Power Outage

In Local

Students at schools affected by a power outage on Monday sat in darkened schools during the course of the day.

Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board sent out a notice that some area schools would be closed due to the power outage caused on Sunday.

Communications spokesperson Greg Kidd said several schools were closed on Tuesday including Dale Road Senior Public School, Northumberland Hills Public School, Roseneath Centennial Public School and Warsaw Public School.

On Monday, students at schools with power outages sat in darkened rooms that were only lit by ambient lighting from windows (except Dale Road Senior Public School which has skylights) and used flashlights when they had to use the washrooms.

Kidd also stated they had to hook up portable generators for water.

“Facilities services staff attended all schools to hook up portable generators to ensure potable water was available during the day. Only delay would be in length of time to set that up.”

Kidd said he couldn’t confirm if exit signs were lit when the power was off, but he did say that fire protections systems, including all detectors and alarms were intact and working. They are powered by a separate battery pack, but there was no indication of how long the battery would last.

Some schools will have portable generators on Wednesday.
