Driver Facing Criminal Charges Following Collision in Cobourg

In Local, Police Blotter

A driver is facing criminal charges after two people were sent to hospital following a dramatic collision on Elgin Street in Cobourg on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.

At approximately 1:20 p.m. emergency services were notified of a collision on Elgin Street at Ontario Street in Cobourg.

When emergency services arrived they discovered the scene was a bit more complex than what they had originally thought.

Acting Sgt. Kyle Tobin told Today’s Northumberland a eastbound van collided with a vehicle just west of Frei Street on Elgin Street.

While the vehicle remained on scene, the van continued on, striking and mounting a curb travelling eastbound.

During the course of travelling eastbound the van heavily rear-ended a pickup truck. The pickup truck stopped, but the van, again continued on.

A witness saw what had happened and at Ontario and Elgin Street blocked the van it to prevent it from leaving the scene.

Two people in the pickup truck were taken to hospital with what are described as minor injuries.

The pickup and van sustained heavy damage. The initial vehicle west of Frei Street sustained damaged to the driver’s side front fender.

Tobin said the driver of the van is facing criminal charges of dangerous driving, leaving the scene of a collision and breach of probation.
