Cobourg Police – Shots Fired Call Leads to Careless Use of Firearm Charge

In Police Blotter

On Saturday, July 18th, at approximately 2:30 pm, Cobourg police responded to a report of multiple gunshots being heard in the area of Danforth Road. Police attended the address and blocked the roadway for safety.

One resident was evacuated while officers investigated.

With assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police, the source of the gunfire was located, all parties were cleared, and all firearms were secured. While officers were approaching numerous rounds could be heard whizzing by officers at a extremely close range.  The male party involved was conducting target shooting with his legally owned .22 caliber long-arm rifle and was unaware that his rounds where landing in an unsafe area.   No one was injured during the incident.

As a result of the police investigation 40-year-old Ken GOOBIE of Scarborough was charged with:

Careless Use of a Firearm contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code.

Goobie’s firearms and Possession and Acquisition Licence were seized, along with two firearms.

Goobie was released from police custody on an Undertaking with a pending court date.
