It was a rare opportunity to speak to two individuals about “tagging.”
Some people may view it as an expression of art, while others view it as mischief to property.
While was down at the bottom of Division Street on Thursday, April 23, 2020 overlooking Cobourg beach around 8 p.m. I noticed two people around the west life guard stand along Cobourg beach.
It was awkward what they were doing, but frankly, who knows. One could even say, who cares.
But immediately after they left, I took a walk up and noticed fresh graffiti or commonly known as “tagging” on the south and west side of the life guard stand. Both were approximately a foot in size.
Just a few minutes later, I spotted the pair and asked them if they were the ones at the life guard stand.
One thing lead to another, and they agreed to remove the tags.
It was a interesting opportunity to speak to both about what it’s like in Cobourg at the age of 20.
What there is to do, and what there isn’t to do.
They explained the reasons for tagging and why people do it.
Shortly after police came and arrested the pair as they were attempting to remove the tags.
They were released a short time later, but charged with mischief under $5,000.
In our youth I’m sure we all have done things we wish we could take back.
In speaking with both, they were very polite and honest throughout the conversation.and it was appreciated.
Over the years, it’s about understanding, the “education through communication” part of the story.
We don’t always have to agree what is right and what might be wrong, but as long as there is communication on all fronts, it’s about a mutual respect and understanding of the issues.
I certainly don’t condone tagging or graffiti, and there certainly seems more in this community of late.
But I will say, I wish them both the best in their future and one mistake doesn’t define a lifetime
