Cobourg Woman Has Concerns With Stopped CN Train Running Constantly In West End

In Editor Choice, Local

Trains may have stopped, but one train is bothering a west end neighbourhood in Cobourg.

Since Thursday, February 6, 2020 trains along the CN Rail tracks in the Toronto/Montreal corridor have come to a stop following a protest in Tyendinaga in support of protesters in Wet’suwet’en who were arrested by the RCMP.

The Mohawk protesters in Tyendinaga are calling on the RCMP to leave Wet’suwet’en.

Sue Dingsdale-Glover lives in an apartment on Westwood Drive in Cobourg and said since Monday, February 10, 2020 a CN train with two engines and a long line of freight cars has been stopped behind the Westwood Plaza with at least one of the engines running throughout the day and night.

The train is stopped just west of the Burnham Street crossing with a long line of rail cars behind it.

Dingsdale-Glover said she supports the protesters, “but my issue is with CN. This train arrived on Monday and the tracks had already been shut down (four days earlier).”

“Why is it here?”

“Why has it been running for two days?”

“And why can’t it be moved to a non-residential peace of track line?”

The Cobourg resident has called CN Rail numerous times over the last two days with no one returning her calls.

On Wednesday, Dingsdale-Glover called MPP David Piccini, MP Phillip Lawrence and the Town of Cobourg, but has yet to hear from anyone about the constant noise.

On top of the noise, Dingsdale-Glover wonders if there is hazardous cargo aboard any of the rail cars.

Today’s Northumberland reached out to CN Rail for comment but hasn’t heard back.
