Northumberland OPP – That Escalated Quickly

On Monday February 3, 2020, shortly before 7:00 pm, members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended a business on Main Street in the town of Brighton regarding an unwanted person who was at the location causing a disturbance and allegedly threatened to burn it down.

Officers attended the scene and was informed that the suspect had just left the location. Police located the person matching the descriptors provided on Elizabeth Street. The suspect refused to engage in conversation with the officers and failed to comply with directions given by police. The suspect was uncooperative, then became verbally abusive and aggressive towards officers. A physical confrontation ensued as the suspect resisted officer’s attempts to make an arrest and began uttering threats towards the officers.

The suspect was transported by police to a nearby hospital to address possible injuries that may have been sustained during the confrontation. While at the hospital the suspect continued to cause a disturbance and proceeded to further threaten and assault the officers.

Robert MORRISON, (age 60) of Collingwood, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

· Obstruct Peace Officer
· Assault Peace Officer (2 counts)
· Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm (3 counts)
· Uttering Threats – Damage Property
· Causing a Disturbance
· Mischief Under $5,000 (3 counts)

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on February 4, 2020.

The officers that were assaulted did not require any medical attention.
