Cobourg Councillor Says Weston Foods Closure Will Impact Local Economy

In Local

Today’s Northumberland spoke with Cobourg councillor and DBIA liaison Adam Bureau about Weston Foods announcement it will be closing the Cobourg plant in June 2020.

Bureau said the news surprised everyone on council when news broke on Monday, January 13, 2020.

“Weston Foods has been a large employer in Cobourg for a very long time and we are going sad to see it go.

Approximately 180 people were given notice of the closure.  Some have been working at the plant since it opened approximately 25 years ago.

“The other factories in the Industrial Park are hiring. I know there will be a difference between the skilled labourers and the general labourers, but at least the majority of them will be able to find other work in Cobourg hopefully.”

“Obviously when that large a number of people get laid off it is going to impact the economy, but I think we’ll be able to pull through – we did with Kraft.”
