Northumberland’s 8th Annual Walk To Remember Takes Place In Port Hope

In Community, Local

Northumberland’s 8th Annual Walk To Remember took place on Sunday, October 6, 2019 in Port Hope.

Globally, October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss month and October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Day and the walk is held close to that day.

Each year, people gather in Memorial Park and write the names of loved ones on balloons before walking to the east beach for a short ceremony.

“We gather in October to remember those lost, support those who have lost, smile, love and keep memories alive,” said organizer Kim Robinson.

The Colossal Dance Team from Port Hope performed in front of 100 people while names of the children were on placards placed along the shoreline.

Before the biodegradable balloons were released, each name was read aloud.

“I know from talking to people how much it means to have somewhere to go to remember their loved ones. Because it’s such a stigma to talk about loss – especially loss of a pregnancy or infant. It helps me heal to do this after losing our daughter and I know it helps other people heal too.”

The event is always run solely on donations and if there is money left over each year it goes to memory boxes for the hospital.
