Northumberland OPP Investigating Illegally Dumped Roof Shingles In Farmer’s Field

In Local, Police Blotter

Police are investigating after someone dumped a load of shingles in his field on Monday, August 12, 2019.

Alnwick/Haldimand Township resident Allan Carruthers said a friend contacted him on Monday at approximately 11:30 a.m. stating they saw a vehicle coming out of a driveway leading into a soybean field Carruthers owns on Brookside Road north of County Road 2, east of Cobourg.

His friend said he noticed mud on the ground by the pavement that indicated it had been in the field.

“As soon as he walked to the edge he noticed the shingles and called me.”

A trailer full of shingles were dumped in the soybean field close to the area of trees along the roadside where they wouldn’t be seen by people driving by.

Carruthers immediately notified Northumberland OPP and put out a message on Facebook.

“If anyone sees a silver 4 door ford pickup pulling a black tandem axle trailer that has an electric dump would like them to come back and pickup the scrap shingles and garbage they left in my field please contact Opp or COBOURG police and pass on license numbers please,” read the Facebook post.

“I think it’s totally disgusting,” Carruthers told Today’s Northumberland.

“You hire somebody to do your roofing at a cheap price and this guy knows very well he’s not going to take it to the dump.”

Carruthers said, “you get what you pay for.”

“If they are caught the charges far outweigh the dumping fees.

Over the years as a farmer, Carruthers said there have been several times people have dumped garbage along his property.

“There are so many people out there that have no morals and don’t care what they do to the environment.”
