Metal Artwork In Port Hope Hopes to Create “Selfie Spots” Promoting the Town

Two metal sculptures were installed along the Ganaraska River in Port Hope on Sunday, August 11, 2019.

Port Hope Marketing and Tourism commissioned the artwork with the goal of creating “selfie spots.

The artwork along the Ganaraska River by the Port Hope Library was created by Rok Capuder who is a blacksmith, carpenter, musician and metal artist.

Capuder, is a local Port Hope resident originally from Slovenia. There he was business owner of Slosart Metal Art and drummer of the band Gonova.

Capuder was also the team leader of an art collective called www.altera-arts.com which included a group of individual artists (that had moved to Canada in 2012.) Since then the collective lived and worked in the Toronto film industry moved to Port Hope Ontario. Currently Capuder works as a builder for the sets of the newest Star Trek Discovery Series in Toronto.

Marko Lipovsek is a musician, luthier, carpenter, sculptor, metal artist who created the artwork by Corbett’s dam.

Lipovsek is originally from Slovenia and originated from the art collective www.altera-arts.com that moved to Toronto in 2012 to pursue a grant to build an art piece at Burning Man. Lipovsek and his Canadian born wife Miranda opened up a prop building shop for the film industry in Toronto. In 2013 Marko and Miranda moved to Port Hope Ontario and currently works as a set builder for the new Star trek discovery series shooting in Toronto.

Residents are invited to post and hashtag #porthopeontario in front of these sculptures to show the world how beautiful and full of culture Port hope is.

The sculptures will be taken down in the winter and set up indoors before being reinstalled in Spring.
