Unattended Candle Cause of $50,000 House Fire In Port Hope

In Local

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to the report of a basement fire on Jiggins Court in Port Hope.

When crews arrived they immediately completed an “offensive fast attack” on what was determined to be a room and contents fire in the basement of the single family residence.

Fire Chief C. Ryan Edgar said the cause of fire was determined to have been a candle left unattended in the bedroom area.

“Fortunately the bedroom door had been left closed, allowing firefighters to access the room before the fire had spread outside the area of origin.”

“There were working smoke and CO alarms inside the residence at the time of the fire allowing for early indication of the fire.”

Firefighters remained on scene until just before midnight where they completed overhaul and assisted the family in the early stages of recovery.

There were no injuries reported and fire has been estimated by the insurance company as an approximate $50,000 loss.
