Cobourg and Port Hope Dealing With Record Water Levels

In Editor Choice, Local, Weather

The winds have died down by the high water continues to cause problems along the lakeshore between Cobourg and Port Hope on Sunday, June 15, 2019.

In Cobourg at Peace Park, water covers nearly 1/4 of the park including the trail and some plaques dedicating trees are under water.

Along Monk’s Cove stairs that used to go down to the beach, could now be used for a boat launch.

In Port Hope, the Ganaraska Trail east of Lake Street has been nearly totally destroyed. In 2017 it cost the municipality over $55,000 to repair the damage.

The pounding of the waves on Friday, caused damage to the trail that had been repaired. Erosion caused numerous trees to be uprooted along the lakeshore and trail. Stones have been tossed over the trail.

There has been no east beach in Port Hope for at least a week. On the west side of Cameco it appears more like a pond than a dirt road.
