Today’s Northumberland has learned a suspect charged with first degree murder has died in custody.

Stephen Murray Kelly, 62, of Selwyn Township, was charged with the first-degree murder of Blythe Sexsmith, 61, of Trent Hills after police were called to a residence in the hamlet of Trent River north of Campbellford on May 6.

At approximately 7:20 p.m. on May 6 Ontario Provincial Police were called to an address on Centennial Lane that is along the water of the Trent River.

Evidence at the scene indicated a person had been seriously injured and Kelly was arrested a short time later.

A number of OPP resources were utilized searching the water for Sexsmith, but on May 10 the search for Sexsmith was called off until further notice.

Kelly was in custody at the Central East Corrections Centre in Lindsay when it appears he may have attempted suicide.

He was rushed to hospital, but later died.

An inquest has not been called at this time and there has been no update from police.
