Update Regarding Break and Enters In Downtown Cobourg

Today’s Northumberland met with Cobourg Police Chief Kai Liu on October 3, 2018.
After having a one-on-one discussion with Today’s Northumberland Editor Pete Fisher, Chief Liu stated he looks forward to working with Today’s Northumberland and their mandate.
Today’s Northumberland is now receiving press releases from the Cobourg Police Service to notify the public.
Chief Liu updated the information that had previously been released by police on a number of break and enters in the downtown area. A number of victims from break and enters had said they had not read any notification on break and enters in the downtown area.
Chief Liu provided Today’s Northumberland with copies of the press releases informing the public of the break-ins.
Today’s Northumberland regrets the error.
The press releases are as follows:

23rd August 2018:
Police responded to a King Street East Business in regards to a B&E. The rear door glass was smashed and 3 boxes of shoes and $80 dollars from the cash registered were stolen sometime overnight. No suspects identified at this time, investigation continuing.

1st September, 2018
Subject: Man Arrested for Unlawfully in Dwelling
The Cobourg Police have arrested a man for being unlawfully in a dwelling after responding to a break and enter in progress.
On Saturday the 1st of September, 2018, at approximately 9:30 am, police responded to a residence in the downtown area for a report of a man who had entered a residence and stole a jar full of change. Police located the man a short time later and placed him under arrest. Police were able to recover the stolen property which was returned to the owner.
As a result of the police investigation, 40 year old Vincent Stephens of Peterborough was charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling, theft under $5000, possession of property obtained by crime, and breach of probation under the Criminal Code and released with an upcoming court date.
The Cobourg Police Service is reminding everyone to keep the doors to their residences locked at all times, even when they are at home.

Male arrested for break and enter, Weapons Dangerous, Possession of break and enter tools and Fail to Comply
The Cobourg Police have arrested a 49 year old male for the offences of break and enter, possession of a weapon, possession of break and enter tools and failing to comply with Probation after responding to a break and enter in progress.
On Sunday the 19th of August, 2018, at approximately 11:36pm, Officers from the Cobourg Police Service responded to a business in the downtown core after receiving a report of a break and enter in progress.As a result of a subsequent Police investigation 49 year old Scott MacDoanld of no fixed address was arrested and charged with Break and Enter a place with intent to commit an indictable offence, Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Possession of Break and Enter Tools and fail to comply with Probation under the Criminal Code.
Scott MacDonald was held in custody, scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice, for a bail hearing on Monday the 20th day of August 2018.

August 4, 2018
Early Morning Break Ins at Home Hardware and Speedy Auto Glass
Just before 6:00 AM and just after 6:00 AM on August 4th, officers of the Cobourg Police Service attended at Speedy Auto Glass and Home Hardware for two separate break and enter incidents, where entry was gained by smashing doorways and then cash and tools were taken.
>A vehicle involved is pictured in the attached photo. The driver’s door and front left corner can be seen to be discoloured, but similar in colour to the rest of the vehicle. This hopefully makes the vehicle memorable and identifiable to someone who may have passed it on Division Street as it left the scenes, or may recognize it from their neighbourhood.
>The Cobourg Police Service is actively investigating these incidents and is seeking any information from the public, who may have information about these break and enters, the vehicle or involved suspects.

5th August, 2018
Subject: Female Arrested for Break and Enter and Mischief Under $5000.00
On Sunday the 5th day of August, 2018, at approximately 1102 PM, Police attended a Break and Enter in progress at 55 King Street West. Jennifer Davidson of Cobourg was placed under arrest for Break and enter and Mischief Under $5000.00.
The accused was held for a show cause hearing.

Sept 18, 2018
Break and Enter – A daytime residential Break and Enter occurred at a downtown residence. Entry was gained by forcing open a door. A large quantity of change was taken. Investigation is continuing.

Police responded to a Break and Enter alarm at Hakim Optical located at 1011 Elgin Street West. Police on scene quickly to find the front door to the business smashed out, and sunglasses stolen from inside the store. . Police remained on scene until the security company arrived to await securing of front door. Investigation is continuing.

Sept. 19, 2018
Break and Enter – Officers were dispatched to the residence located in the West end regarding a break and enter in progress. Officers attended the area, and located two insecure doors. A search of the premise was completed – with negative results. Police observed the house was currently under extensive renovations and were unable to determine if anything was out of place at this time.

Sept.23 2018:
Police attended Beyond the Blue Box on Covert St. upon report of a motion alarm activated in their East building. Upon arrival police observed an overhead door ajar. The building was searched and nothing appeared out of place . A short time later store staff were able to review security footage which showed police clearing the building and a male suspect exiting the building as police were searching. Nothing reported missing at this time. Surveillance video being reviewed. Investigation continuing.
