SIU Lays Charge against Ontario Provincial Police Officer with Peterborough Detachment in Relation to Collision

In Local, Police Blotter

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Tony Loparco, has reasonable grounds to believe that an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer with the Peterborough detachment committed a criminal offence in relation to a collision that occurred in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township in February of 2018. As a result, Director Loparco has caused a charge to be laid against the officer.
An SIU investigation found the following:
At approximately 5:25 p.m. on February 6, 2018, an OPP officer was traveling eastbound on Highway 7, en route to a call.
In the area of Highway 7 and Highway 28, the police cruiser became involved in a collision with another vehicle.
The driver of the civilian vehicle – a 46-year-old man – sustained serious injuries and was transported to a Peterborough hospital for treatment. He was then airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

As a result of the SIU investigation, OPP Constable Miriam Green is facing one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, contrary to s. 249(3) of the Criminal Code.

The officer is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 70 Simcoe Street in Peterborough on October 18, 2018.

The matter is now properly before the courts. In consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will make no further comment pertaining to this investigation.
