Durham Police – Item Found in Food Packet in Ajax

In Police Blotter

An investigation is underway after a soup packet contained an unknown item was found by a Ajax resident Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at approximately 6:00 p.m., members of West Division responded to a residence in the area of Rossland Road West and Stannardville Drive in Ajax after a suspicious item was found inside a sealed package of dried soup. It was reported by the complainant that when she attempted to cut the foil packet, the package emitted a powdery substance. The victim was not injured and contacted police.

Investigators determined that the product contained an item that was later identified to be a fumigation product normally used to protect the food from insects. For reasons unknown the item was found inside one of the food pouches. Investigators are working with the company to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. The company has been co-operating fully.

Information has also been forwarded to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the local health department for follow up.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact West Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2521.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
