Statement from the Chief of the Defence Staff

March 9, 2018 – Ottawa – National Defence

General Jonathan Vance, Chief of the Defence Staff, made the following statement in response to a charge laid by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police:

“Today, the RCMP charged Vice-Admiral Mark Norman with one count of Breach of Trust.

“As Chief of the Defence Staff, I must consider the impact and implications of criminal charges against a senior Canadian Armed Forces Officer on our organization. This is a complex matter, separate from the judicial process. I need time to weigh these factors carefully and deliberately.

“Vice-Admiral Norman remains a member of‎ the Canadian Armed Forces.

“I will continue to refrain from commenting publically on this case, as it would be inappropriate for me to do so.”
