Hilarious Musical Little Shop of Horrors Starts at Capitol Theatre

In entertainment

The hilarious musical Little Shop of Horrors takes the stage until September 3, 2023 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope.

The show tells the story Seymour (played by Amir Haidar) who works at a florist shop on skid row. When he finds a mysterious plant and starts feeding it, he finds the plant has a thirst for blood.

The Little Shop of Horrors was originally a 1960 film and then was redone in 1986 and starred Rick Moranis.

Director Rob Kempson said he always wanted to direct the production.

“I have always wanted to direct the show because it’s fun and silly and camp-y and everything that I think musical theatre can and should be,” describing it as “dark and full of joy at the same time.”

With a show like Little Shop of Horrors, Kempson said the pre-planning starts months in advance.

“As of announcing the season our designers and directors start working on the shows to get onto the stage.”

There are four different plants with three different puppeteers that play the role of Audrey II.

“As Audrey II grows, by the end, she needs to be able to eat people and for us to be able to get to that place there are a few steps along the way. We’re not talking about electronics or animatronics, we’re just talking about a human inside making the magic happen.”

Kempson proudly says they have a “phenomenal cast” with some people who are local, but some from across Canada.

Kempson said, “be prepared to come and laugh at a giant puppet that eats people.”

The show runs until September 3 and people can purchase tickets at capitoltheatre.com or 905.885.1071
