Cobourg council extended kudos to its emergency-service providers at Monday’s council meeting – both the Cobourg Fire Department and Cobourg Police Service.

Councillor Adam Bureau noted that in the first 100 days of 2023 – through April 10 – the fire department had responded to more than 427 emergency calls.

Bureau went through the list, which included two carbon-dioxide alarms, 32 false alarms, 44 public-assistance calls and three public-hazard calls.

Of 13 pre-fire-condition calls, nine had to do with kitchen emergencies.

Of 46 rescue calls, two involved extrications from elevators, two were ice-water rescues and 29 were a result of vehicle collisions.

More than half the calls fall under the heading of medical emergencies. Of these 298 calls, 28 were drug- and alcohol-related.

“A big shout-out to the Cobourg Fire Department for all their hard work – we are proud of you guys for doing that,” Bureau said.

Councillor Brian Darling offered his congratulations to the police for the public-engagement meeting that filled the Lions Community Centre with citizens concerned for their safety.

“Lots of residents,” Darling said.

“It was very good to see the turn-out, and I think it was greatly appreciated as it was needed and the time was right.”
