The 31st Campbellford Memorial Hospital Polar Plunge took place on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Lions Club Park.

Starting off at noon close to 30 people took a dunk in the chilly waters of the Trent River in Campbellford.

Executive Director of the Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation, John Russell said the water was just as cold as ever participating in the event.

“It was a beautiful, clear day which makes it really nice and makes a lot of people come out and cheer you on. The water – as cold as ever, which makes for a refreshing dip.”

Saturday marked the first year in three years the plunge wasn’t virtual, “so it was kind of nice to get everyone all back together.”

The event was a fundraiser for the Campbellford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary which brought in well over $10,000 and local residents Bruce and Betsy Thompson matched the donations bringing to the total to well over $20,000.

“It’s really great not only having the support of the community and the auxiliary, but most definitely Bruce and Betsy who are stepping up for the hospital once again.”

Thirty-three-year-old, Campbellford resident Matthew Neumayer actually stayed in the water for over five-minutes.

Practising going in the waters of the Trent River, three times a week since August, Neumayer said neoprene gloves and boots are a necessity

“It’s mental. I’m shivering right now but I don’t feel that cold,” said Neumayer.
