Alderville First Nation held their annual Remembrance Day Ceremony on Sunday, November 6, 2022.

Taking part in the ceremony were community members, Regional Deputy Grand Chief, Jim Bob Marsden, MP Philip Lawrence representative Steve Gilchrist, Cobourg Legion Branch 133, Cobourg Legion Branch 133 Pipes and Drums, Branch 133 Ladies Auxiliary and Alnwick/Haldimand Township Fire Department.

Members of the ceremony assembled at the Alderville Community Centre before marching to the cenotaphy for the ceremony at 1 p.m.

Alderville First Nation Chief Dave Mowat read the names of the enlisted and fallen from the community.

The laying of family wreaths included, Beaver, Bigwin, Blaker, Comeco, Chase, Chubb, Tobico, Crowe, Franklin, Gray, Loukes, Marsden, Simpon, Smoke and Sunday.

Mowat said after the ceremony the monument was built in 1927 to commemorate the sacrifice of soldiers from Alderville in the First and Second World War.

“The fact that such a monument was built in 1927 and that fundraising took place amongst the community along with technical advice from a man from Campbellford and our men provided the labour and our women provided the meals. It’s a striking monument and symbolic of that sacrifice. In Alderville First Nation, it’s always been an important time of year, because we always remember the sacrifice that was made.”

Mowat said nine members of Alderville were killed in the First World War and two were killed in the Second World War.

“Almost every able bodied man left the community and signed up for service.”
