National AccessAbility Week Kicks Off in Front of Victoria Hall

In City Hall, Local

National AccessAbility Week kicks off in Cobourg on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

National AccessAbility Week provides Canadians the opportunity to celebrate the valuable contributions and leadership of Canadians with disabilities, highlight the work of individuals, organizations and communities who are removing barriers, and reflect on ongoing efforts to become a better, more accessible, more disability-inclusive country.

The Wheel The Walk planned for Victoria Park was cancelled due to inclement weather, but town staff got the chance to find the challenges of operating a wheelchair or walker trying to get into a store or on a bus by Victoria Hall.

Emergency Planner Shannon Murphy said in the short time she was in a wheelchair, she quickly found out how difficult it is to manoeuver around.

“There are actually moments that I actually became quite sad realizing how people have to avoid activities. And I just went down King Street and went into a couple of businesses.”
“We’ve got along way to go.”
