A memorial is taking place for a Port Hope woman who went missing and was found deceased almost a month later on May 19, 2022.

It begins with a memorial walk, but there is much more than that to remember 29-year-old Madison “Madi” Chard.

Celebrant Avril Ewing is organizing the memorial in consultation with Madi’s family and with their blessing will take place this Saturday, May 28 starting at 6:30 p.m.

Madi’s father Mark said although the family is having a private service, “we felt it was necessary to include the community, that bonded together to try and bring Madi home.”

“It will be an opportunity to grieve with happiness and colour.”

“Madison was a young hippie who was very close to many people of all walks of life and identities. Please come out in tie dye, costumes, drag, whatever makes you happy.”

The walk will begin at Gage’s Creek with a walk along the trail to the East Beach where people will gather to remember Madi.

It is a 30 minute walk from Gage’s Creek to the East Beach and parking is limited so you may want to consider being dropped off there and picked up at the East Beach at the end of the memorial.

The walk will begin at 6:45pm.

Walkers will arrive at the East Beach at 7:15pm and events will begin at 7:30pm.

If you are unable to do the walk, please come to the East Beach for 7:15pm.

There will be music, candles, incense, flowers, speeches and more.

Ewing said she and the Chard family hopes this gives the community several ways to mourn, share, and heal.

“If you can’t make it to the event, stand by a lake, a stream, or a sink or water and remember her smile and light,” said Mark.

“Then turn to the people beside you and tell them you love them.”

Ewing asked people to understand they are organizing this event with just a few days notice so more details and information will be added as we confirm them.
