Port Hope Police Media Release – Woman’s Debit Card Stolen And Used/Man Arrested for Unlawfully At Large

Man arrested for being unlawfuly at large, woman’s debit car stolen and used. News Release 25th June 2018

On Sunday the 24th of June at 2:30pm Port Hope Police were called to an east end residential unit regarding a disturbance. Police received information that there was a loud argument going on in the residence. Upon arrival Police Officers attempted to speak with individuals inside to determine the nature of the problem. No one responded and after several attempts to have someone come to the door Police had no choice but to force entry into the residence to check on the people’s wellbeing. Inside, a man and a woman were located. The man was located in the basement hiding under a blanket.  Police determined he was wanted for being unlawfully at large. The man was taken into custody and delivered to Kawartha Lakes Police Service who had carriage of the investigation.  The woman was spoken to and determined not to be in need of assistance

A Port Hope woman was defrauded of almost seven thousand dollars after her debit card was stolen from her. The woman was at the Your Independent Grocer on Saturday when a man in the parking lot came up to her waving a $20.00 dollar bill. The man said she had dropped it. The woman opened her purse to check and determined it was not her bill. Later she noted her debit card was missing and several cash transfers being completed.  It is believed this man took the the card when the woman opened her purse under the ruse of her losing $20.00.  Police feel the man was inside the store and observed her use her PIN code. The man is described with darker skin and a strong accent.   Police advise citizens to be aware of their surroundings when keying in PIN numbers. Cover up the keyboard when putting the number in the key pad.  The woman’s financial institution is replacing the stolen money. Police are checking CCTV images in an attempt to identify a suspect.
