Family Members Devastated At The Loss of Their Home in Port Hope

Devastated, lost, numb are just some of the feelings going through a family that lost everything in a Port Hope house fire on April 2, 2022.

It was approximately 3:30 p.m. when Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services received the 9-1-1 call from a woman stating her house was on fire on Armour Street.

The woman told Today’s Northumberland she smelled smoke, but couldn’t see or find the source until she opened up a closet in the kitchen.

A wall of black smoke lunged out of the door when she briefly opened it.

Closing it immediately, she phoned 9-1-1- and got out of the house. But it was to late. Seconds later fire was coming through the walls of the home.

When fire crews arrived the rear of the home was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters did what they could, but the damage was done before they arrived. The house will likely have to be demolished.

On Sunday, April 3, at 10:20 a.m. fire crews were called back to the scene when crews that were tarping the residence discovered smoke coming from the roof.

The fire apparently rekindled in the roof area. Using ladders, firefighters cut two holes in the roof and also worked inside the damaged home to extinguish the fire.

The home and contents were not insured and the people living in the home including a mother, her 16-year-old son and uncle lost everything but the clothes on their back.

A GoFundMe has been started for the residents that lived at the residence that was the family home for many years.

For anyone wishing to donate clothes, a woman’s med, and for the men xl clothing.

The cause of the fire is believed to be suspected wiring in the closet.
