Durham Police – Three Suspects Arrested in Grandparent Scam

Three male suspects are facing fraud-related charges following a grandparent scam that occurred last week.

On Wednesday, March 23, 2022, the 75-year-old victim, a resident of Durham Region, received a call from a suspect who claimed to be a lawyer for his son. The suspect stated that the victim’s son was involved in a car accident and needed $30,000 to release him from prison. The victim released the money and after realized that he was defrauded. He contacted police.

On Monday, March 28, 2022, the suspect called the victim again and asked him to provide another $20,000. Members of our Financial Crimes Unit with the assistance of our Robbery Unit and K-9 Unit intercepted the suspects. Three parties who were in a newer Hyundai SUV were taken into custody.

Jordan FORTUNE-FLETCHER, age 31, of Ontario and Tristin JOHNSON, age 28, of Hamilton were charged with Fraud Over $5,000.

Alexander NAGY, age 43 of Quebec was charged with Fraud Over $5,000 x2.

They were all released on Undertakings.

DRPS would like to remind residents who receive any unanticipated requests for money to be extremely cautious and speak to a family member or trusted advisor for support.
