Warkworth Fundraiser for Ukraine Refugees “Overwhelming”

In Community, Local

Over the top was a phrase that described a Pierogi For Peace Fundraiser for Ukraine on Saturday, March 26, 2022 in Trent Hills.

The firehall in Warkworth was jammed with people who came out to support to support the food, craft sale and silent auction.

Heather Hill was just one of the many volunteers involved with the event spoke to Today’s Northumberland said, “it’s been an incredible day.”

The money for the fundraiser is going direct to Refugee Assistance Care of family members in Przemysl, Poland.

With money still being counted well into Saturday evening, organizers have said the amount is at least $17,500.

Firelights Belly Dancing Troupe entertained visitors coming into the firehall while there was homemade pierogi’s, borscht, scones, buns, quilts, birdhouses, woodwork, local art, gift baskets and much more was at the event.

Hill said there was a line-up to get in when the doors were opened and organizers sold 2,000 pierogi’s in 16-minutes.

“We’ve sold all of our baked goods, we’ve sold out all of the borscht, we’ve sold most of the crafts – it’s been overwhelming.”

Even if people were placing bids on the items or buying anything Hill said, “we’ve had people cramming fistfuls of cash into our donation bin.”

The final tally of donations has yet to be added up, but Hill said it will be in the thousands.
