A simple tweet from her husband brings a sigh of relief for Port Hope resident Rebecca Walker.
She knows her husband is still alive.
Walker’s husband Anthony flew out of Toronto on Saturday, February 26, 2022 headed from Ukraine to help in whatever capacity he can.
At the present Anthony is in refugee camp, near the town of Medyka at the Poland border with Ukraine.
But when other Canadians arrive, he will be going into the Ukraine and helping in anyway he can.
Rebecca stays at home taking care of the families three children, Alex (age 2), Luke (age 5) and Neal (age 7).
Today’s Northumberland spoke with Rebecca on Wednesday, March 2 at the couples home in Port Hope while Alex played carefree around their home. A child innocent of what his father has volunteered for.
A tweet from her husband sent out to his followers brings a sigh of relief her husband is alive.
“Good morning everyone. Alive and well. Didn’t get to sleep until 10:30 this morning but managed to get 7 hours,” says the tweet.
Rebecca said she thinks that’s the most sleep he’s got since he’s been there.
“That’s how I know he’s alive,” Rebecca says with a brave smile.
On Thursday as the couple were watching the news, then finally Rebecca asked him if he was going to travel to Ukraine.
A day later, her husband said he’d be going and a day later he was in a plane heading to help in anyway he could.
With his limited medial background for the Ukraine refugees, or taking up arms against the Russians.
“At first I was very angry. I couldn’t believe it – what his motives were. Then I started understanding why he’s over there and acceptance and proud.”
“He has a big heart and I want to be very supportive for him.”
A number of people have also reached out in the community offering their support to Rebecca and her family.
“Just keep him in your thoughts.”
Rebecca spoke to him when he first arrived, but she receives more information from his tweets because he’s been so busy.
Her biggest fear, like any wife would have is that he won’t be coming home.
“He wants to help in any way he can. Right now he’s buying supplies and giving them to people at the border right now. He’ll eventually make his way to the capital and fight.”
The couple met while in air cadets approximately 12-years ago, which is the only place he’s used a firearm.
Anthony is in his second semester taking Cyber Security at Sir Sanford Fleming College, but that is on hold while he’s away.
When people find out where he went that seemed so abrupt of a decision, their first reaction is shock which Rebecca understands.
“But he just doesn’t want it to come home. He wants to stop it there.”
The couple doesn’t have any relatives or any friends that are Ukrainian.
“He’s just going out of the goodness of his heart to help. Because we are all human.”
“The worries always going to be there until he’s on my doorstep, but I’m very supportive. He’s doing phenomenal things over there. He’s doing great things for them.”
Anthony’s plan was to be there for two weeks, “but I think he’s going to go for longer.”
“The more he can help the better.”
