A emergency order to remedy was put in place to remove a possible hazard at 20 King Street West in downtown Cobourg on Thursday, February 17, 2022.
It was possible that bricks could fall onto the sidewalk and possibly injure pedestrians.
Notices on the door stated two infractions that needed to be dealt with:1. Property Standards By-Law No. 18-99, as amended – Section 4 (7) (a) “Exterior walls, parapet walls and components thereof shall be maintained in good repair, weathertight, free from cracked or broken masonry units, defective or deteriorated wood or metal siding, cracked, broken or loose stucco and free from loose or unsecured objects and materials and in a manner to prevent deterioration detrimental to the appearance of the building’
2. Property Standards By-law No.18-99, as amended – Section 4 (1) (a) “A building, accessory structure or any part thereof shall be maintained in a structurally sound condition so as to be capable of sustaining its own weight or any additional weight which may be put on it through normal use, and materials which show damage or evidence of decay or other deterioration shall be repaired or replaced. The Property Standards Officer may require an engineer’s report of a building if, in his or her opinion, the building is not structurally sound, such engineer’s report to be at the expense of the owner(s).”
The notice on the door indicated, the Property Standards Officer is satisfied that there is non-conformity with the above standards to such an extent as to pose an immediate danger to the health or safety of persons in proximity to the building. Immediately remove or repair the damaged/decaying parapet wall located on the roof of 20 King Street West, to eliminate any risk of accident and injury.
On Thursday, fencing was installed around the area.
A large boom was brought in on Friday afternoon along with a crane.
Workers chipped away at the bricks until officials deemed it safe.
