Front Yard of Cobourg Home Becoming Tourist Attraction for Christmas Display

In Editor Choice, Local

It’s a Christmas display that just keeps growing much to the delight of a Cobourg couple.

Bob and Emmy Brown’s front yard of their home at 26 Glen Watford has been the site of a Christmas display for the last nine-years.

This years display is just about complete with a few more additions to take place.

“When we’re out here putting it together, we’ve had a lot of people drop by and comment on it and they say they look forward to it every year,” says Bob.

Each year the couple add something new to the display.

There are approximately 5,000 Christmas lights throughout the display.

Last year they build Santa’s Workshop and this year it was a igloo.

“Neither my wife or I knew exactly how to do it so we gave it a shot – and we’ll improve it next year.”

The igloo is made from chicken wire and plastic over the top. A strobe light is placed inside it.

With three grandchildren aged, one-year-old, four-years-old and 13-years-old there is no shortage of ideas.

The couple puts in approximately 60-80 hours each year creating and setting up the display.  They also spend a similar amount of time putting together Halloween decorations for their front yard.

“It’s for the kids, but my wife and I are big kids – we enjoy it.”

Other than a few items they’ve had to buy and a train with cars that go with it that came from the Eaton’s store in downtown Toronto when they used to have displays, most of the items at the front of Brown’s house are handmade by the couple.

“It’s fun. Every year we find that more people on the street are putting more and more out as well.”

“This community is becoming a drive-by neighbourhood for all the right reasons which is cool.”
