Three investigators with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office looked for the cause into a deadly fire that claimed two lives in Port Hope.

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to the fire in a duplex on Friday, October 8, 2021.

When the arrived the home was engulfed in smoke and flames.

A officer with the Port Hope Police and a off-duty volunteer firefighter rescued one person from the duplex.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought through the intense heat to rescue two others, but tragically they died.

On Saturday, October 9, 2021 investigators with the OFM assisted by members of the Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services looked for any clues that would help determine the cause of the fire.

OFM Investigator Mike Bird confirmed the fire started at the rear of the house on the main floor.

The two victims were located in different areas of the second floor.

Bird also stated, “it appears not all the smoke alarms were working.”

A smoke alarm was found in the upper floor with no batteries.

A postmortem on the two victims will be held on Sunday, October 10, 2021 to determine the cause of death.

It’s believed the onsite investigation should be completed Saturday.
