Two People Charged After Cannabis Act Search Warrant Executed

(MUNICIPALITY OF TRENT LAKES, ON) – Members of the Peterborough/Northumberland Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a Cannabis Act search warrant on August 12, 2020 at a property on Laplantes Road in the Municipality of Trent Lakes and seized 3386 Cannabis plants and 530 pounds of processed Cannabis bud. 

In 2021 an investigation led by the Peterborough/Northumberland CSCU revealed that the same location on Laplantes Road was again being used to produce cannabis in contravention of the Cannabis Act. On August 18, 2021 members of the Peterborough/Northumberland CSCU with the assistance of the Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Canine Unit executed a Cannabis Act search warrant on the Laplantes Road property. Two individuals were arrested and charged with Cannabis Act violations.

Officers seized 990 outdoor cannabis plants and also located a cave accessible through a cabin built on the side of the escarpment. Within the cave which went approximately 50 meters into the escarpment, officers located and seized 231 pounds of cannabis bud which was packaged in one pound vacuum sealed bags. Guohua CHI (age 46) of Scarborough, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

• Possession for the purpose of distributing

• Cultivate, propagate or harvest any cannabis plant at a place that is not their dwelling house

Guang XU (age 63) of Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

• Possession for the purpose of distributing

• Cultivate, propagate or harvest any cannabis plant at a place that is not their dwelling house

The accused were released and are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on September 23, 2021.
