Breaking News – Obstruction of Justice Charge Laid Against Retired General Jonathan Vance

On July 15th, 2021, the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) charged Retired General Jonathan Vance with the following:

  • One (1) count of Obstruct Justice, contrary to Section 139 of the Criminal Code.

On 4 Feb, 2021, the CFNIS assumed investigative responsibility into allegations of misconduct. It was during the course of this investigation that the obstruction of justice is alleged to have occurred.

Considering the specifics of the case and in the interest of justice with due regard to the limitations of the Military Justice System identified in the findings contained in the Third Independent Review Authority report, the CFNIS decided to pursue the relevant criminal charge in the civilian justice system.

As this matter is now proceeding through the civilian justice system no further details can be released at this time.

In all cases, the subject of charges is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The matter is now proceeding through the civilian justice system. 

The CFNIS is a specialized unit established within the Canadian Forces Military Police Group (CFMP Gp). Its primary mandate is to investigate serious and sensitive matters in relation to Department of National Defence (DND) property, DND employees and CAF personnel serving in Canada and around the world. The CFMP Gp and the CFNIS conduct police investigations independently, without interference and in accordance with the highest professional standards.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service seeks to investigate and where appropriate lay charges based on factual evidence regardless of rank or professional status of those involved.

All members of the Canadian Armed Forces whether they are part of Reserve Force or Regular Force are expected to serve/ behave in a respectful and professional manner at all times.
