Fire Chief says quick actions of homeowner helped prevent further damage to home following garage fire in Hamilton Township on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

At approximately 3:05 p.m. Hamilton Township Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on Whitney Howard Road west of Camborne.

The caller reported heavy smoke was coming from the three bay garage which was attached to the home.

“On arrival it did not look good for the first few minutes,” said Hamilton Township Fire Chief Kelly Serson.

Serson said there was heavy smoke and heat that was built up in the garage with strong winds adding to the challenge.

“The homeowner did the right thing and didn’t open the garage (doors) up. So it did keep it contained.”

“It definitely saved it.”

Fire crews also had a quick response after attending two medical calls previous to the structure fire.

Serson adds the fire crews did an incredible job knocking down the fire quickly and preventing it from spreading to the home.

The main damage was confined to the three bay garage including a vintage boat.

Damage is estimated at approximately $70,000 to the garage and approximately $35,000 to the contents.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
