Jim McCormack, who has served over 23 years with the Municipality of Port Hope, will retire in May 2021.
Municipality of Port Hope Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Director Jim McCormack has announced his plans to retire this spring, after more than three decades dedicated to public service, over twenty of which were spent in Port Hope.
“Words cannot express my appreciation and gratitude for the opportunities this organization has provided me throughout my tenure with the Municipality,” remarks Mr. McCormack. “I have watched the Department grow leaps and bounds and have had the privilege to develop as a professional in the recreation sector as a result of the people who have supported and mentored me along the way.”
Mr. McCormack joined the Municipality in 1997, as Facilities Manager in the PRC department. He was promoted to Director in April 2015. He was also a dedicated staff member of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee and the Waterfront and Riverwalk Working Group.
A few of Mr. McCormack’s notable accomplishments include his involvement in the Town Park Recreation Development project, which saw the construction of the facility in 2002. Additionally, he was a key member of the Jack Burger Sports Complex Revitalization project, a $7 Million refurbishment, which included the renovation of the facility with a state-of-the-art design, overhaul of the aquatic amenities, the addition of program and rental rooms, and a new canteen.
In his time with the Municipality, Mr. McCormack also undertook the development of two Leisure Services Master Plans, various trail improvements, the installation of the community’s first splash pad, numerous public art installations, many park and facility improvements, and was dedicated to working closely with community and user groups.
“I am also grateful for the support of the numerous Councils over the years and for the opportunity to work with our wonderful residents and user groups,” continues Mr. McCormack. “There are so many dedicated and talented people in our community who give their time and effort to make Port Hope a better place to live and play.”
“Jim’s departure is certainly bittersweet,” notes David Smith, Chief Administrative Officer of the Municipality. “We are thrilled that Jim has decided to step back from public service and spend more time with his family and loved ones, but he will be sorely missed. In every sense a true professional, Jim has made a lasting impact on our community and our organization. We wish him the very best in his next chapter and thank him for his many years of dedication to our community.”
Mr. McCormack’s official retirement date is May 31, 2021. The Municipality will be seeking applicants for the Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture and a job search will commence in the coming weeks.
