Update – Damaged Receptacles Preventing Garbage Pickup in Downtown Cobourg

In City Hall, Local

Northumberland County has stated the reason for some of the waste receptacles not being cleaned out regularly is because some have been damaged.

On Monday, July 6, 2020,  Cobourg councillor, interim chair of DBIA and local business man Adam Bureau cleaned up the garbage by hand in downtown Cobourg,

Bureau said some of the garbage in the waste receptacles hadn’t been cleaned out for a month.

Director of Communication with Northumberland County, Kate Campbell stated to Today’s Northumberland after confirming with the Waste Division that collection of garbage from, “a few of the public receptacles in downtown Cobourg has been postponed due to damage to the receptacles that prevents the contractor from being able to properly remove the waste contents.”

“Inserts in the receptacles, which are removed by the contractor to transfer the contents into the truck and then returned to the receptacles, have been removed without authorization.”

Campbell said this causes the garbage bags to fall to the bottom of the receptacles, and loose garbage to build up on top.

“Because of the health hazards associated with requiring collection staff to sift through loose garbage to retrieve the open bag at the bottom of the receptacles, collection at these locations has been temporarily postponed while the Town acquires new inserts.”

Campbell said it’s anticipated the new inserts will be installed by the end of next week.
