It may come as a surprise, but a Port Hope couple remained very calm as they turned on their back light and saw a black bear starring at them just over a week ago.
The black bear has been wandering around the streets of Port Hope for approximately two weeks feeding off bird feeders and garbage.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has put two bear traps in the area to try and capture the animal and release it where it is safe.
The cell phone video was taken just before midnight when after the couple heard their cat making noises and looking out the back door. When they turned on the back light they were surprised to see the bear on their back patio less than a metre from them looking through the glass door.
The couple phoned police, but when they arrived the bear had vanished once again into the ravine.
As of Saturday, May 9, 2020, the bear has eluded authorities in Port Hope.
There have been rare day sightings of the bear, but for the most part it comes out at night in the area from Cumberland Street to Centennial Drive in Port Hope.
For the last few days there have been no reported sightings that Today’s Northumberland is aware of, but in Cobourg there seems to be a bear in the west end of town.
For the last few days a bear has been wandering in the area of Glen Watford Drive and Westwood Drive area.
At this point there is no way to tell if it is the same bear.
