Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Truck Catches Fire Inside Station

Damage is estimated at over $100,000 after a Alnwick/Haldimand Rescue truck caught fire at the firehall in Grafton on Thursday, March 26, 2020.

Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Chief Mark Diminie said he was dropping off disinfectant cleaning supplies off at Station 1 on Edwardson Road in Grafton shortly after 5 p.m. when he spotted the fire.

“As soon as I walked into the building it was full of smoke,” Diminie told Today’s Northumberland.

After placing a radio call for firefighters from Centreton and Grafton to respond Diminie went back inside and determined the smoke was coming from the rescue unit.

The cab of the rescue truck was heavily damaged by fire and the back compartment where a number of pieces of equipment were stored was also damaged.

“I think it’s extremely lucky for our department. It was just coincidence that I just happened to stop today to drop supplies off here.”

“If I had of kept going home, who knows it could have broke through the windows of the rescue and we could have lost the whole building, plus three more vehicles.”

It’s believed the fire started in the area of the dash behind the steering wheel.

Damage is estimated at approximately $130,000 and it’s unknown how much equipment was lost in the fire.
