Fire Destroys Barn In Hamilton Township

In Editor Choice, Local

Smoke was visible from as far as Peterborough following a barn fire in Hamilton Township on Friday, November 8, 2019.

Hamilton Township Fire Department responded to the barn fire on Earl Joice Road just north of Oak Ridges Drive (County Road 9) at approximately 1:45 p.m.

As fire crews were responding they could view the smoke in the air and knew they had a working fire.

When fire crews arrived the metal barn was engulfed in flames.

Fire crews from Alnwick/Haldimand Township and Port Hope Fire Department were called in to help shuttle water to the scene.

Northumberland OPP closed Oak Ridges Drive at Burnham Street North (County Road 18).

Hamilton Township Fire Chief Kelly Serson said fire crews contained the fire to the barn, but the vinyl siding on the home was damaged due to the heat.

Part of the barn was used as a machine shop with welding tanks, there were also two propane tanks.

A number of horses were not injured and were in the field, but a tractor, farm implements and all the horse equipment including saddles were lost in the fire.

Because most of the barn was made from metal, it collapsed making it hard for fire crews to access the fire.

They expect to remain on scene until approximately 2 a.m.

At this point Serson said there is no cause of the fire and no damage estimate.
