“Take Our Kids To Work Day” At Cobourg Fire Department

In Local

It was “Take Our Kids To Work Day” throughout Canada on Wednesday November 6, 2019.

Around the area parents brought their children to work to give them an idea of what they do for a living.

At the Cobourg Firehall, Captain Scott MacDonald brought his 14-year-old daughter Liza to work with him.

“I think this is a great idea,” said MacDonald about bringing her to work.

“It’s part of her life as she grows up with me being a firefighter.”

MacDonald said the fire department is his second family with him being a full-time firefighter for 21-years.

“She’s never had the chance to go through the equipment like she is today, so she’s learning a lot of what I do.”

The grade-nine Cobourg Collegiate Institute student put on equipment to be hoisted in the departments platform aerial truck.

When the father/daughter team came down, they both said even though the sun was out, it was very cold high above.

Next it was on to seeing what it’s like having the bunker gear on and breathing apparatus.

By the time Liza had all the gear on, she was carrying an additional 55 pounds.

“I always come here and see all the trucks go out sometimes, but I never learned anything until today,” said Liza.
