Cornerstone’s Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Is Back!

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre (Cornerstone), is excited to announce registration for the 12th Annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes®, presented by Lakeridge Chrysler, is now open! On Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11:00am the good men and women of Northumberland County will to take to the streets to raise eyebrows and awareness to support and prevent family violence.

Traditionally, Walk A Mile In Her Shoes®: The International Men’s March to Stop Gender Violence, urges men to raise awareness about the issue of family violence by donning a pair of high heels and taking a literal approach to walking a mile in someone else’s shoes, but Cornerstone wants to emphasize the Walk is open to, and inclusive of, the entire community.

“The Walk really is about bringing the community together to support women and children in Northumberland County,” says Manager of Community Engagement, Janelle Eisler. “We encourage all men, women and children to participate, even if that means wearing sneakers over stilettos to strut your stuff for a good cause.”

Although heels are provided with registration (size and availability permitting), all are welcome to participate in the annual Walk whether in sneakers, flip flops, heels or boots! A registration fee of $20 for adults and $10 for those under 18 applies, however walkers are encouraged to collect additional pledges to support Cornerstone – whose goal is $35,000 for this year’s event.

“Walk A Mile is a great opportunity for the community to come together to participate in a fun event that raises awareness and funds for a serious subject and cause,” says Cornerstone Executive Director, Nancy Johnston. “We need to work together as a community to end family violence – as it is a community issue, which requires community solutions. Awareness and funds raised for Cornerstone through this event go a long way in helping women and children impacted by violence move out of danger and into a violence free future,” Johnston adds.

Last year Cornerstone provided service to over 2600 women, children and youth through shelter, counselling and prevention programming. Walk A Mile In Her Shoes® plays a critical role in funding the various programs and services Cornerstone offers that turn fear into hope, and help local families rebuild their lives after experiencing abuse. The community is encouraged to come out and be a part of the solution.

Lakeridge Chrysler Matthew St. Amand and his dealership have been great supporters of Cornerstone through individual gifts as well as sponsorship for Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. The plaque they received was to highlight their achievements in being one of Cornerstone’s top supporters and recognize them for this ongoing support. If you need anything else, please let me know.
