Northumberland Road Builders Association Holds Truck Rodeo In Cobourg

In Editorial, Local

Winter may be far away, but it had the feel to it with a number of snow plows at the Cobourg Public Works Yard competing in the annual Truck Rodeo.

It’s put on by the Northumberland Road Builders Association and there were 24 competitors from Northumberland County, Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough County.

The top six drivers (two from each County) will compete in the Provincial Championships being held near Pembroke.

There is a written test, an obstacle course that tests their skills backing up, manoeuvring around a corner, getting around mailboxes and backing into tight quarters. Another area is finding 10 defects with a plow which would be similar to checking their vehicle in the morning before plowing.

“It’s fun, but what we find out is a lot of these driver’s are repeat drivers who like to come back,” said of the local President John Cane.

“But it’s a learning experience for some of them. The newer drivers coming in for the first time, realize there are things they don’t know and this is a good way of not rubbing it in.”
