Breaking News – Alnwick/Haldimand Township Mayor and Northumberland County Warden Steps Down Temporarily

In Editor Choice, Local

Alnwick/Haldimand Township and Northumberland County are advising the community of a temporary change in leadership for both councils following notification from Township Mayor and County Warden John Logel that he will be taking a leave of absence from elected office in order to address a personal matter.

“I have enormous respect for the responsibilities of elected office, and for the people of this community, who rely on council to ensure the effective delivery of municipal programs and services,” states Mayor Logel.

“Both councils are addressing important priorities that will shape the future of our community, and the roles of Mayor and Warden require—and deserve nothing less than —an individual’s full attention and energy to see these through. Therefore, as I make a necessary shift in focus to a personal matter, I will be taking a temporary step back so that the business of both councils can continue at full pace.”

In Mayor Logel’s absence, Deputy Mayor Gail Latchford will take on the role of Chair of Alnwick/Haldimand Township Council, as well as representative for the municipality on County Council.

She notes, “Under John’s leadership as Mayor, the organization has made great strides towards delivering on priorities for this term. Council will continue to advance these efforts, and we wish John all the best during this leave.”

As the longest serving member on County Council, Port Hope Mayor Bob Sanderson will stand in as Acting County Warden.

He notes, “John has been tireless in his approach to his duties as Warden, tackling all initiatives—large and small—with his trademarked authenticity. We look forward to his return to the role, and in the interim Council and staff will ensure continued forward mo-mentum in operations.”
