In Local

M.P.P. David Piccini brought together industry leaders from across Northumberland County this morning for a roundtable to discuss skills training and development and linking workers affected by the GM layoffs with opportunities in Northumberland – Peterborough South.

Piccini was joined by Hon. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities and Fred Kosseim, President of Northumberland Manufacturers Association. In addition to industry leaders, Piccini invited neighbouring universities and colleges to take part in the discussion that focused on skills training and development. Piccini also invited representatives from Unifor Local 222 to ensure that workers were represented at the table.

“Through the passing of the Making Ontario Open for Business Act, we have taken a critical first step in ensuring we create the conditions for job growth and economic opportunity,” said Piccini. “As a Government, we have a responsibility to the hardworking people of this Province and that is why I felt it important to have an open discussion about skills training and how we can link workers affected by the GM layoff with many new and emerging opportunities in Northumberland County.”

The roundtable took place at Venture13 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre in a packed room of over 45. The Government will continue to support those affected by the GM announcement and is working closely with the company, workers and industry to ensure skills retraining and employment services assistance is offered. In addition, Piccini is putting together a package of manufacturing opportunities in Northumberland – Peterborough South.
