Pesky Beaver Causing Problems In Cobourg

In Editor Choice, Local

A pesky beaver is causing trouble at James Cockburn Park in Cobourg.
The park located on William Street has the Cobourg Creek travelling through the park starting from Elgin Street to William Street.
The beaver has been working on building a dam just north of the lamprey dam that was installed many years ago.
Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority Watershed Biologist Lindsay Champagne said they believe the beaver has been working on the dam since the beginning of November.
“It’s in its early stages,” said Champagne.
“It’s not to aggressive at this point.”
But because of the potential risk to flooding of the Conservation area parking lot, the GRCA has contacted a trapper who will be removing the beaver.
“Due to the grade and the amount of water that would be pooling area.”
“We are going to investigate where the beaver is lodging, if it poses a large threat and then he will discuss possibilities of trapping methods.”
Champagne said it’s the busy season for trappers, “but this is a high priority because we don’t want anymore damage to trees.”
The beaver has been taking down numerous trees including one that is approximately one foot in diameter.
“It could potentially get much larger if we left it.”
It’s unknown at this point if the trapper will remove the beaver and release it elsewhere, of if he will have to kill it.
“But we have not come to a conclusion yet.”
