Northumberland—Clarke Member of Parliament Philip Lawrence is voicing strong opposition to Budget 2026, accusing the Carney government of continuing failed Liberal policies and using questionable accounting practices to make its fiscal projections appear better than they are.

In a statement released following the presentation of Budget 2026, Lawrence said he was disappointed with what he described as the government’s unwillingness to change course after 10 years of Liberal spending policies.

“What’s worse is that they have attempted to evade scrutiny and accountability through accounting practices that can only be described as a shell game,” Lawrence stated.

At the centre of Lawrence’s criticism is the government’s plan to transfer $55 billion to Crown corporations, which he claims is being categorized as “off-budget” spending.

Lawrence argues that while the transfers may not appear in the government’s deficit projections, the money will still add to Canada’s overall debt and increase interest payments.

“The transfer does not show up in the deficit, but it will increase the debt and the interest payments,” he said.

Lawrence compared the government’s accounting approach to the everyday financial challenges facing Canadians, arguing that ordinary people cannot simply reclassify their household expenses to make their financial obligations disappear.

“Canadians can’t move their grocery bills to ‘off budget’. They can’t give their gas bill a different name to avoid paying it. And they can’t hide their credit card balance by putting it in a different column on the spreadsheet,” he stated.

The Northumberland—Clarke MP said the issue is particularly concerning given the financial pressures facing families and businesses.

Lawrence said he regularly hears from constituents about the cost-of-living crisis and believes the budget should have focused on measures such as lower income taxes, controlling government spending and providing relief to small businesses affected by tariffs.

“Instead, we got a deceptive accounting maneuver and no visible end to the irresponsible spending,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence said he assessed the budget with the needs of local residents in mind, asking whether it would make life more affordable for people living in Northumberland—Clarke.

“The answer is clear to me: no.”

He confirmed he will vote against Budget 2026, adding that he intends to continue advocating for measures he believes will make life more affordable for Canadians.

“I will be voting against this budget, and will continue in my advocacy for real measures that make life more affordable for Canadians,” Lawrence stated.
