Northumberland County will open its overnight Winter Warming Room tonight, November 2, for people in need. As this service opens for the season, the County is inviting community members to apply to volunteer their time and help create a welcoming and supportive environment for visitors throughout the winter.
The Winter Warming Room, located at 600 William Street in Cobourg, will provide a safe, warm overnight space for individuals experiencing homelessness during the colder months. It will operate seven nights a week from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Volunteer opportunities will include:
· Preparing and serving coffee, snacks and light refreshments;
· Spending time with guests and engaging in friendly conversation;
· Receiving and organizing donations; and
· Helping create a welcoming and respectful environment for guests.
“There are many different ways people can contribute, and we want to make volunteering accessible to anyone who has some time and wants to help,” says Manager of Homelessness Services, Community and Social Services, Bill Smith.
“People can volunteer for an hour, an evening or whatever time works for them. There is no minimum time commitment. Sometimes something as simple as sitting down with someone, having a conversation and making them feel welcome can make a real difference.”
Volunteers can sign up by visiting Northumberland.ca/Volunteer and completing a volunteer form. County staff will follow up with interested volunteers about the opportunity and will arrange an interview to discuss the applicant’s interest and ensure the role is a good fit. Orientation and training will then be provided.
