Scottish Country Dancers Wrap Up Season with Annual Dance in Cobourg

In Community, Local

The Cobourg Scottish Country Dancers celebrated the end of another successful season with the fourth edition of their Annual Dance at the Cobourg Memorial Temple on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Approximately 40 dancers travelled from communities across Ontario, including Kingston, Orillia, Toronto, Oshawa, Peterborough and Brighton, joining local dancers for an afternoon of Scottish Country Dancing.

The event featured 14 dances performed to live music by violinist Blair Mackenzie and pianist Linda Clark, both from the Peterborough area. Midway through the program, dancers enjoyed tea and refreshments prepared by members of the local group.

Scottish Country Dancing is most often performed in “sets,” typically consisting of four couples facing their partners. Before each dance, local instructor Diane Coulombe walked participants through the sequence of formations, ensuring everyone was familiar with the movements before the music began. Once the music starts, dancers must rely on memory and teamwork to successfully complete the dance.

The activity is widely recognized as an excellent workout for both the body and mind, combining physical movement with concentration and coordination.

The annual dance, previously held at the Concert Hall at Victoria Hall, serves as the traditional conclusion to the Cobourg Scottish Country Dancers’ season. The group holds weekly classes from late September through June, welcoming dancers of varying experience levels throughout the year.
