Cobourg Police – Impaired Driving Enforcement Through January and February STEP

In Police Blotter

In response to the results of the Festive RIDE program, the Cobourg Police Service continued its focused efforts to combat impaired driving through January and February 2026 as part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).

Building on the enforcement and awareness initiatives conducted over the holiday season, officers maintained an increased presence on Cobourg roadways throughout January and February, with a continued emphasis on detecting and deterring impaired driving.

These efforts included conducting eight (8) RIDE programs over the two-month period, during which officers checked over 1,300 vehicles.

Approved Screening Device Demands – five
Impaired Arrests – three (one Impaired by Drug, two Impaired by Alcohol)
Numerous Cautions for various Highway Traffic Act Offences
Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious and fatal collisions. Alcohol, drugs, and fatigue can significantly impair a driver’s ability to react, make safe decisions, and maintain control of a vehicle.

“Impaired driving is a year-round concern, not just during the holidays,” said Constable Taylor Emmerton, Cobourg Police Service. “Continuing RIDE programs into January and February reinforces the message that driving while impaired will not be tolerated, and that public safety remains our priority every day of the year.”

The Cobourg Police Service thanks the community for its cooperation during RIDE initiatives and encourages residents to continue reporting suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
